Tis’ the time for starting to wrap all the goodies you’ve bought for your friends and family, but if you’re anything like us you’re probably scrolling through Pinterest trying to find out what aesthetic you’ll be going for with your gift wrap this holiday season. We’re here to break down three of the most popular gift wrapping aesthetics this year and why they might be the perfect fit for you!

1. Traditional
This the probably the style of gift wrapping you know best. It comes in the form of pretty patterned red and green paper and a shiny stick on bow. This style of wrapping will never go away because it is tried and tested. Great for large families and for little kids, it’s easy to unwrap. Traditional gift wrapping lends itself well to people who love their festive colours during the Holiday season, but also people who may be looking for a pop of colour in their neutral holiday decor.

2. Neutral
Along side Tradition gift wrapping, Neutral wrapping seems to have become a tried and tested favourite for many people. With a simple feel and minimal colours and patterns it allows for ample additions of greenery and jute cording. Perfect for smaller families that may like to take their time opening gifts, or co workers who will take them home to go under their trees neutral wrapping allows for seamless transitions between decor styles.

3. New Wave
This year we’ve all seen how people have turned their left over oranges into beautiful natural decor pieces to add to their holiday decor. We recently shared a reel on how to make dried orange garland, but we’ve also seen it popping up in gift wrapping now. Taking a neutral approach to the wrapping style this new wave trend allows for bright pops of colour and makes your gifts look super simple but still very approachable. Although this definitely won’t fit into the aesthetic of a traditional Christmas decorator it is great for people who may not celebrate Christmas and not want greenery and printed wrapping paper.

Lighting is a tough thing to work through, especially because it’s all about preference. When you live in a city that spends a good 8 months out of the year with snow on the ground and little daylight, the lighting in your home becomes more important than anything; because of this a lot of people will move to a whiter “daylight” coloured bulb to stimulate real daylight in the home. This style bulb has pros and cons. A daylight coloured bulb is great for people actively seeking a lighting option that will make their space feel brighter and more open. By having more cool blue tones the daylight style bulbs bring in a sense of calming bright light that help to make your home feel like it’s July and not the middle of November. Daylight bulbs can get to be a bit much though if used everywhere in your home, some people stay away from this colour simply because it can come off a little cold and sterile. We suggest using daylight bulbs in spaces like bathrooms and kitchens. Warmer tone bulbs usually fall into the soft white category and also have great benefits but also a few downfalls; for instance soft white is a great colour for cozy bedroom vibes, it gives off a warm feeling and makes the room feel super inviting. By using a soft white you’re sometimes giving up the level of brightness you would be with a daylight, but you win in relaxed toned lighting. Some people may stay away from a soft white because it can be perceived as tacky, but much like daylight colours we suggest using soft white in strategic places in your home, try for bedrooms and formal dining areas.

We’re Baaaaaack! 🤍

The Restoration Hardware Reclaimed Oak Coffee Table is easily one of the most beautiful coffee tables to bless the decorative table market. It’s really got it all, warm tones with a rugged but pulled together vibe that really makes it look effortless. Some of us probably dream about this coffee table but aren’t willing to drop the money on it (because it’s just a coffee table... like seriously), so here’s a few dupes that might help you fulfill that dream.

1. West Elm Anton Solid Wood Coffee Table $573
This beauty is definitely the best dupe to the RH Oak Table. The warm wood tones compare nicely, and the silhouette is almost identical. Although the price tag is a little steep for anyone on a tight budget it would definitely fall into the “an investment piece that won’t break the bank” category. Not to mention it’s sustainably sourced and who doesn’t love that.

2. Structube Sohan Coffee Table
$150
This coffee table is stunning and is probably the best price point I’ve ever seen for a solid wood coffee table. The clean lines and deep walnut colour are so universal for every style out there which makes it perfect for people looking for something simple yet beautiful to upgrade their space. Let’s not forget the price tag too, I mean who could turn that down?

DIY Floating Night Stands

In our last DIY post we talked about a very affordable and easy DIY shelving/nightstand option, and after that I got a lot of requests for a more modern version of the crates. So, here it’s is. Buckle up for this one guys because it does take awhile, but the end result is stunning!

1. Measure your space and decide what size you want these shelves to be. I chose to make mine 12” deep by 14” wide by 12” long.
2. Collect all your materials! For this project you will need a circular saw that can rotate to a 45 degree angle, the lumber you’ve chosen (I went with a 12ft 2x12” untreated spruce), wood glue, a nail gun, a drill, 3” multi purpose screws, finishing nails, sand paper to the grit you like, wood filler, a small can of clear varnish and your preferred stain (I chose Minwax Early American). You’ll also need one 2-4ft 2x1” piece of scrap wood.
3. Start by prepping your lumber, measure out the first piece your going to cut, and ensure your circular saw is set to the correct 45 degree angle. As you work through the cuts make sure to check that all your angles are lining up with each other. I got the Newberry Design builder to help me make all of the appropriate cuts and would suggest that if you’ve never used a circular saw you bring a friend over to help out!
4. Once all of your cuts are made you can begin to assemble the boxes. Start by wood gluing the bottom of the box to one of the sides and then using your nail gun loaded with finishing nails simply nail 4-5 evenly spaced spots long where the pieces connect. Repeat this for the entire box being careful to line up all edges correctly.
5. Now that the boxes are assembled you’ll need to attach your 2x1 to the inside edge on the back of the box so that we can use it to attach the shelves to the wall. Attach your 2x1 by measuring the inside edge of the box, and cutting with your circular saw at a 90 degree angle on that measurement. Once cut you can use your drill and 3 of the 3” multi purpose screws to secure the 2x1 in place.
6. After you’ve assembled your boxes you can fill any nail holes and imperfections in the wood using a wood putty/filler that matches the wood you chose. Leave this to dry overnight.
7. After leaving to dry over night you can start to sand your boxes using either an electrical or hand sander. Make sure you sand with the grain using steady pressure, you’ll achieve the best result this way.
8. Once you’re done sanding you’ll need to prep for stain. You do this by taking a fine tooth brush like your broom and wiping over the surface. After you’ve done this you can wipe with a damp cloth.
9. Now that the shelves are prepped for stain you can go ahead and use a stain brush or a cloth to apply your preferred stain. Ensure this dries for at least 24 hours before using a paint brush to apply the clear varnish. Once the varnish has been applied allow to dry for another 24 hours.
10. And just like that you’re done building your DIY Nightstands/Shelves. Install on walls using drywall anchors and by drilling your multipurpose screws through the wood into the drywall anchors.
