DIY Floating Night Stands
In our last DIY post we talked about a very affordable and easy DIY shelving/nightstand option, and after that I got a lot of requests for a more modern version of the crates. So, here it’s is. Buckle up for this one guys because it does take awhile, but the end result is stunning!
1. Measure your space and decide what size you want these shelves to be. I chose to make mine 12” deep by 14” wide by 12” long.
2. Collect all your materials! For this project you will need a circular saw that can rotate to a 45 degree angle, the lumber you’ve chosen (I went with a 12ft 2x12” untreated spruce), wood glue, a nail gun, a drill, 3” multi purpose screws, finishing nails, sand paper to the grit you like, wood filler, a small can of clear varnish and your preferred stain (I chose Minwax Early American). You’ll also need one 2-4ft 2x1” piece of scrap wood.
3. Start by prepping your lumber, measure out the first piece your going to cut, and ensure your circular saw is set to the correct 45 degree angle. As you work through the cuts make sure to check that all your angles are lining up with each other. I got the Newberry Design builder to help me make all of the appropriate cuts and would suggest that if you’ve never used a circular saw you bring a friend over to help out!
4. Once all of your cuts are made you can begin to assemble the boxes. Start by wood gluing the bottom of the box to one of the sides and then using your nail gun loaded with finishing nails simply nail 4-5 evenly spaced spots long where the pieces connect. Repeat this for the entire box being careful to line up all edges correctly.
5. Now that the boxes are assembled you’ll need to attach your 2x1 to the inside edge on the back of the box so that we can use it to attach the shelves to the wall. Attach your 2x1 by measuring the inside edge of the box, and cutting with your circular saw at a 90 degree angle on that measurement. Once cut you can use your drill and 3 of the 3” multi purpose screws to secure the 2x1 in place.
6. After you’ve assembled your boxes you can fill any nail holes and imperfections in the wood using a wood putty/filler that matches the wood you chose. Leave this to dry overnight.
7. After leaving to dry over night you can start to sand your boxes using either an electrical or hand sander. Make sure you sand with the grain using steady pressure, you’ll achieve the best result this way.
8. Once you’re done sanding you’ll need to prep for stain. You do this by taking a fine tooth brush like your broom and wiping over the surface. After you’ve done this you can wipe with a damp cloth.
9. Now that the shelves are prepped for stain you can go ahead and use a stain brush or a cloth to apply your preferred stain. Ensure this dries for at least 24 hours before using a paint brush to apply the clear varnish. Once the varnish has been applied allow to dry for another 24 hours.
10. And just like that you’re done building your DIY Nightstands/Shelves. Install on walls using drywall anchors and by drilling your multipurpose screws through the wood into the drywall anchors.
