🌳🦋 september book club: the island of missing trees by Elif Shafak / Elif Şafak
a little book club switcheroo! 🔄 due to a reprint delay, we’ve had to swap our september + october picks.
if you were already signed up for september to read ‘yours for the taking’ by gabrielle korn, you’re still signed up! your september book is just now ‘the island of missing trees’ by elif shafak. we sent everyone registered an email with the details, so check your inbox 📩
this month’s pick comes, as always, courtesy of Shannon Theroux and her endless supply of books to make us all talk for two hours straight 🗣️
set between cyprus and london, the island of missing trees moves through decades of love, loss, family history, and displacement. at the centre are kostas, a greek cypriot, and defne, a turkish cypriot, whose relationship begins on an island divided by conflict. years later, their daughter ada is left with questions about a past her family rarely speaks about.
tw: war and political violence, death and grief, displacement, and intergenerational trauma.
a note on tws: shannon and i read the books alongside you, so we’re going in blind too! we do our best to flag things ahead of time, but we may miss something. if you catch anything we should add, let us know 🫶
📆 sunday, september 13
⏰ 3:00 pm
we’re usually a first-week-of-the-month crew, but we know back-to-school week is its own special brand of chaos for a lot of us so we pushed september’s meeting back a week.
