Life completely changes when you have a child with special needs. For us, it meant letting go of careers and paid work, becoming a one-provider family, and taking on a lifetime of advocacy, whatever it takes.
The responsibilities don’t simply end as our children grow older. For many families, the planning, support, and advocacy continue for as long as we are here in this world. And for us, even after we pass away.

A reshared post from the perspective of a celebrity and actor who is also raising a child with special needs.

Get • I really can relate to this.

Colin Farrell talks about choosing sobriety because his son needed him, it’s the part about being totally present that really resonates with me.

When you’re raising a child with additional needs, you can’t afford to be half there. They need your patience, your awareness, your energy and sometimes your strength, often when you least expect it.

For me, being present isn’t just about being in the same room. It’s about being ready. Ready for the difficult moments, the transitions, the meltdowns, and everything else that comes with this journey.

Our children rely on us in ways other people might never fully see.

Kyle and Mom at our new community rec centre! A couple of weeks ago, Kyle visited the new gym with Karly (physiotherapist from Groms Physio) and he loved it! Today, he proudly showed Mom how he learned to adjust and move the equipment for his workout. Independently! 👏 So proud of you, Kyle! Your big sister is proud as we share the update to her in London. She loves to see you working out in the gym!

Founder and Director, Hummingbird and Bean Society. A father to three amazing children, Ron is also someone who has lived this journey from the very beginning.
As our family’s provider, he supported mom in stepping away from her career to care for Kyle and advocate for him from birth. Ron understands the importance of creating inclusive communities for people with diverse abilities. He also understands that individuals with complex challenges may need greater support but beyond support, everyone deserves to have a purpose, meaningful opportunities, and a true sense of belonging. Thank you, Ron.

Meet Susanne Stockdill , one of the directors of Hummingbird & Bean Society.
Hummingbird & Bean Society was established to help sustain our cause and create more opportunities for people with diverse abilities to learn, grow, belong, and thrive.
We support inclusion for people facing a wide range of challenges, especially those whose needs are often overlooked in society and who may not receive the same level of recognition or support.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to belong.
Thank you Susanne for joining the new Hummingbird and Bean Society.

Visiting Deep Bay! They’re staying at Susan and Ken’s beautiful property, Meet Me at Deep Bay. They’re taking turns preparing meals, cleaning up and hopefully Kyle follows through! 😄No parents too!Just with peers and incredibly kind adults who have chosen to spend their time supporting the Deaf youth. Experiences like this are so meaningful. We chose this special place for Kyle and his friends because Ken was formerly a staff member at the Deaf school with a lovely place and Kyle really enjoyed spending time with him during his elementary years. Mom always knew Ken’s fun, genuine, and kind nature someone who could teach, guide, and support the kids while making sure they had fun along the way. We got to see Ken a lot during Covid as he would drop off the students’ learning materials and iPads back then. Now that Ken is retired and enjoying island life, this week is a wonderful opportunity for the boys to spend time together, build friendships, and gain a little more independence.
Thank you so much, Ken and Susan, for being such wonderful hosts! The teens are having a great time! 🤗 it’s so wonderful to reconnect and see the this!

Here is Kyle with one of the amazing people! ❤️ His Grade 8 EA, who has now become a teacher.
We were so fortunate that Kyle got to spend a lot of time with Brittany this summer before she leaves Vancouver to begin a new journey teaching outside the Lower Mainland.
Kyle said he is sad… “broken heart.” 💔 If you know Kyle, you know that is exactly what he signs when he is feeling upset or sad.
Thank you, B, for everything. Thank you for genuinely caring for Kyle and for the many other students you have taught and guided with such dedication. Kyle has been very lucky to have you in his life.
We wish you nothing but the very best in your new adventure! And don’t worry, Kyle will always stay connected, he has plenty of stories to share! 🤗❤️

The first room to be renovated is Kyle’s! July 30 Dad got started, and Ryan came up with a great idea. Dad loved the suggestion, stopped what he was doing, and redesigned the plan. Ryan is coming up with ideas that are even better than what Dad originally had in mind for Kyle! ❤️ Kyle truly thrives in a minimalist environment. A simple, uncluttered space helps him feel calm, focused, and organized, so we’re creating a clean, Japanese-inspired minimalist room.
And the best part? Kyle told us exactly what he wanted:
“I want a room without too many things and organized. Not crazy and messy.” ❤️

In January 2020, Mom really wanted to explore the idea of a little coffee shop for Kyle. The timing wasn’t right yet, and then the pandemic hit. Instead, we coped with staying home by creating mala bracelets inspired by Kyle’s stories, which became a way to advocate for awareness, sharing who Kyle is and what CHARGE Syndrome is.
Then, in 2024, the right time finally came for that little coffee shop idea. We now see that it was never just for Kyle. He can only spend a few hours there before getting tired, but Kyle is the one who opened the door for this opportunity to happen.
Somehow, the universe aligned the right people and opportunities, and that little idea is now evolving into a NON-PROFIT Society, with a strong Board of Directors who can help shape what it could achieve for many other youth with diverse abilities.
Thank you for your patience, trust, and support. We’ve learned so much along the way!
