Sunday Morning Notes ☕️
Where Love Can Thrive ❤️
Mark 12:28-31
Jesus says love is the greatest commandment. He said the most important thing is for us to love God and our neighbor. If this is so, why do we see so little love around us, especially in the church and in Christians? 😬
Love is not just a feeling, and when we treat it that way we start off on the wrong foot. 🚫
John 14:15-16
Love is not just something you feel or read about. It is something you follow through on. It isn’t something we are naturally drawn to. Love is beautiful, fun, and precious, but it isn’t always easy or come natural to us. ❤️
Love is proven by what we do, not what we say. It matters how we treat people and that is what defines how important love is to us. 👏
Matthew 7:16
Fruit is the evidence. When we look at a Christian no matter how long they have known Christ, we expect to see something different about them compared to those who live in the world because who you are is evident by the fruit you produce. 🍎
Galatians 5:22-23
The fruit of the spirit is the identification of believers. We can identify where someone stands by the way they speak and act. When people consider your words and actions, where do people think you stand in regard to God? ❔
Love is not talk or opinions. It is fruit. 🍎
Something is growing whether it’s good or bad. We must ask what is growing out of our lives today? 🌱
God has a purpose and plan for all of our lives just like an apple tree has a purpose to produce apples. If an apple tree is only growing green leaves and no fruit, it is not in its purpose. Are we representing God’s specific plan and purpose for our lives? 🌳
Ask yourself, “Who am I when no one is watching?” That is who you truly are. It doesn’t mean we don’t mess it up or that we are always perfect and set the perfect example. There is grace, but we need to pay attention to who we are consistently. 🔎
We have a significant responsibility to represent Christ to others. When we neglect Jesus’ command to love God and others, we run the risk of damaging our influence to someone else that we may have had the opportunity to be the only witness and fruit that someone got to see. 💔
People don’t experience our faith through our words. They experience it through the way we live our lives. 👏
1 John 3:18
We are to act in love. ❤️
As a culture, we have misunderstood what love is. As a church, we have not done the best job defining it. 😬
1 Corinthians 13:4-7
Love is not jealous, boastful, prideful, dishonoring, self-seeking, easily angered, and does not keep a record of wrongs. ❌
Love is patient and kind. ✅
The problem is not with love but what we have made it out to be. 🤯
Faithfulness is the foundation where love abounds. God is faithful. He doesn’t have to try to be, it’s who He is. ❤️
John 3:16, Romas 5:8
God loved us so much that He sent His one and only Son while we were still sinners and hated Him. Jesus loved us so much that He came even knowing what it would cost Him. ✝️
Matthew 26:39
A thought to consider and reflect on:
Jesus was 100% God and 100% man. When He was in the garden, Jesus’ love may have hit the limit of human capability, though the God love He has is never ending. He knew He was going to face great agony spiritually, emotionally, and physically and that He was about to experience hanging on the cross and bearing the sins He didn’t deserve to bear. Jesus’ faithfulness is what prevailed in the moment to carry out His Father’s will. ❤️
So often we try over and over again to love people who don’t love us back, and they continually hurt us and push us away. We eventually come to the end where our love isn’t resilient. Just like Jesus, faithfulness is what carries through when love has ended. Faithfulness produces the resilience necessary for love to succeed. 🙌
Sometimes it is difficult to love our neighbor. Faithfulness is what we stand on to carry us through so we can love when it is difficult. It’s not one or the other: love calls us to faithfulness and faithfulness carries us through to be loving when love is low or gone. We know what the standard is for us based on the Word: we are called to love. When love is low, we have to rely on faithfulness. 👏
We have given the impression that love is natural and always easy. So when love fails and isn’t there anymore, we must rely on faithfulness and integrity just like Jesus. When He hung on the cross, He did it because He loved us (as evidenced by His praying for the forgiveness of those who crucified Him), and He was also faithful and had integrity to stay the course of His Father’s mission. ✝️
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing hymn, verse 3:
“O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let that grace now, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart; O take and seal it;
Seal it for thy courts above.” 🥹
The writer of this hymn understood our hearts are naturally prone to wander. 😬
Proverbs 20:6, Jeremiah 17:19, Romans 7:15
Left to our good intentions, we fall short at best. 😣
We love God. As a Christian, our greatest desire is to please Him and to follow Him. ❤️
Love and faithfulness don’t come naturally. Jesus defined what love looks like. 🥹
Romans 12:9
Love does not accept sin. We are to hold tightly to what is right. 👏
We are not to pretend to love others. ❌
We are to truly love others. ✅
John 1:14
We do not choose between grace or truth, but walk in both. 👏
John 8:31-32
We don’t define truth. If you will remain faithful to Jesus’ teachings, you will know the truth that sets us free from trying to define who we or others should be and from striving to earn and change. 📖
What were His teachings? The most important was to love God and love your neighbor. ❤️
When we know and study the Word and allow that to become an integral part of our walk, we will be free from the trying and struggling we tend to do to get to our desired destination. ⛓️💥
It’s not your truth or my truth. It’s His truth. And by that truth, we will someday all be judged equally. 🙌
Unfailing love is grace. Faithfulness is truth. We are never going to have Jesus’ level of grace, but we can certainly set that as our standard because He is the truth. ❤️
John 8:1-11
He doesn’t condemn you. That’s love. He also said go and sin no more. That’s truth. ⚖️
The world says truth and love cannot coexist. 🚫
We have allowed love to define truth in our culture. We cannot love everybody without truth. We need love and faithfulness which requires truth. We have to make a stand and ask ourselves where we have made love too soft and truth too harsh. 🤔
We have to as ourselves, “Where does my life not match my words?” ❌
You don’t look like Jesus when you say the right things. You look like Jesus when you do the right things. 👏
When we combine love and truth on the foundation of faithfulness and find ourselves at the end of our love, our life built on the Word and His teachings will carry us through. It’s not that love left, it’s that our emotions don’t allow us to see it. Faithfulness will stand no matter what because it isn’t a feeling. It’s a foundation, and by that we can live our faith like Jesus -who set the perfect example for us. ❤️
Where do you stand? How do you define love and how important it is in your heart? Ask God to shine truth in your life, and He will be faithful to do so. 🔦
