Knowing Our Neighbours: Philoçoffee Espresso Bar ☕️
If you’ve seen an Umbrella team member wandering South Melbourne in search of caffeine, chances are they were heading to Philocoffee - our go-to local, run by husband-and-wife duo Chee and Karen.
The name itself - Philoçoffee - is a clever nod to “philosophy,” reflecting Chee’s deep love of coffee and (by his own admission) his “penchant to talk about it.”
Since 2014, Philocoffee has been more than a café - it’s a community. Chee’s love of coffee (and talking about it!) inspired Canvas Town Coffee, their own roasting brand named after a Gold Rush settlement.
What makes Philocoffee special isn’t just the perfectly brewed coffee - it’s the connection. Chee and Karen know their customers by name, and during lockdown, that local support helped them keep going.
