When I was 15, I was staying at a friend's house and was woken by his parents to let me know that someone had broken into my house and assaulted my mother. It was a moment in my life that will stick with me forever, and one that changed me as a person.
Today I was notified that a comedian we had booked at The Bar for a show in November had been recorded making a joke about sexual assault of a minor in one of his shows.
Some may find this type of humour funny. I do not. As someone who has lived through it, as someone who has a young daughter, and generally as a human, I do not condone that sort of "joke".
This show has now been cancelled.
I apologise to those who had purchased tickets.
But I am not comfortable having that sort of mentality in my venue.
There's no place for "jokes" like that in our society.
We can, and must, be better than that.
And I will not give a platform to someone who thinks that's something to make light of.
